Middle Back Pain Treatment
Right middle back pain can range from acute, localized pain to being serious and chronic. There are many different ailments that can contribute to right middle back pain, so it is important to understand the different structures and problems that are involved with pain in the area.
The right middle back is composed of many different structures, each of which can exude their own type of pain if injured. This section of the back contains the thoracic spine, which is simply the middle portion of the spine. The bones that make up the thoracic spine are the vertebra, whose job it is to protect the spinal cord. Within the spine is the spinal cord which houses the nerves that transmit the signals from the brain to the lower extremities. Between the vertebrae are discs of cartilage which are shock absorbers and aid in movement. In addition, there are also muscles and tendons that are attached to the middle back which help to stabilize the area.
In most cases involving right middle back pain, the pain is the result of a strained muscle. Usually, this can be attributed to overworking the muscle either from repetitive lifting or from exercising too much, or not stretching before starting a rigorous exercise routine. Luckily, most cases of muscle strain in the right middle back can be treated with relatively simple means.
Among the other types of right middle back pain is arthritis. This disease often affects people who are over 40 years old and it causes inflammation in the joints. Sometimes it can cause great discomfort and even make moving difficult. In addition, years of wear and tear on the cartilage between the vertebrae can cause them to thin. This can also cause difficulty with movement as the elasticity of the cartilage dissipates. If left unchecked, the vertebrae can end up nearly rubbing on one another. Osteoporosis is another disease that sometimes affects people as they age. With this condition, bone density decreases, increasing the risk of developing a fracture in the right middle back.
Most cases of right middle back pain can be treated by relatively conservative means. Rest and anti-inflammatory medications are often initially recommended. In addition, special exercises that are intended to stretch and strengthen affected muscles are also recommended, sometimes in consultation with a physical therapist. Surgery is also a possible treatment method, but in most cases more conservative treatment methods are recommended first and prove to be effective in the majority of cases. If pain continues or increases after about six weeks of conservative treatment methods, surgery is often considered depending on the particular condition.
Right middle back pain in many cases can be prevented. Maintain a good posture at all times to prevent unnecessary stain on muscles. Also, make sure to stretch and exercise in order to keep muscles strong and flexible. In addition, obesity can take a large toll on the middle back so it is crucial that the proper weight is maintained.
